Sambalpur University: Students lock main gate to press demands

Sambalpur: Tension prevailed on the premises of Gangadhar Meher University situated in the city following students’ unrest this afternoon.

According to reports, more than 500 students of the University staged a sit-in by locking the main gate of the institute to protest hike of different fees in the hostels.

Later, they had a minor face-off with the authorities of the University after the latter tried to pacify them without assuring to address their demands.

“Though most of us belong to very poor families, they have been increasing the hostel fees. Besides, we don’t have the minimum facilities of bed, table, chair and fan, then why will pay more money,” said a protester.

The agitators also claimed that they fees have been hike without any prior notice.

“They are increasing the fees without any notice and when we protest it they are threatening to rusticate us from the University. Besides, they are sending complaints to our families. However, we are not going to withdraw our strike. We will seat until our demands are fulfilled,” said another agitator.

Meanwhile, heavy security arrangements have been put in place to avoid any untoward incident.
