University Grants Commission (UGC) has proposed to now allow students having completed a four-year undergraduate (UG) program, including a research component with a CGPA of 7.5 and above, to directly enroll in PhD programs without a master’s degree as a mandate.

This decision is a part of the Draft University Grants Commission Regulations, 2022 released on June 9, with the UGC seeking comments and feedback from the stakeholders by March 31.

UGC also released the draft curricular framework and system of credits for the four- year program, as proposed by the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. Several prominent Central universities, including the University of Delhi, are planning to implement the four-year programs from the coming academic year 2022-23.
