anti liquorTalcher: As part of the growing anti-liquor movement in rural area of Odisha, hundreds of men and women held a rally in Jambudihi and Belapada village against the flourishing liquor trade in the Brajanathpur panchayat of Angul district on Sunday. They also submitted a charter of demands to the Godibandha Police Station IIC asking for stringent action against liquor mafias in the panchayat.

Hundreds of locals marched through the two villages holding placards with anti-liquor messages and resorted to sloganeering in the anti-liquor rally held under the aegis of the Jambudihi-Belapada Gaan Kalyan Samiti in the morning today.

The agitators claimed that illegal country liquor vends are operating in the forested areas near the village since lon, but police is not taking any steps against the illegal traders. At such a juncture, the coming up of another foreign liquor shop in the village would make the situation worse, they said.

The protesters later submitted a letter of demand to the Godibandha Police Station IIC through the village sarpanch urging him to take stringent action against the illegal country liquor sellers as well as the upcoming foreign liquor shop in the village. The samiti members warned of intensifying the stir in the coming days if police fails to take action against liquor units.
