New York:  Researchers in the US have discovered that an experimental cancer drug called AR-12 inhibits the Covid-19 virus from infecting cells and replicating.

AR-12 has been studied extensively as both an anti-cancer and anti-viral drug and showed that it is effective against viruses including Zika, mumps, measles, rubella, chikungunya, drug-resistant HIV and influenza.

“AR-12 works in a unique way. Unlike any other anti-viral drug, it inhibits cellular chaperones, which are proteins that are required to maintain the right 3D shape of viral proteins,” said study author Paul Dent from the Virginia Commonwealth University in the US.

“The shape of the virus is critical to its ability to infect and replicate,” Dent added.

According to the study, published in the journal Biochemical Pharmacology, one of the cellular chaperones inhibited by AR-12 is GRP78, which is essential for the reproduction of all viruses.

GRP78 acts as a sort of cellular stress sensor and is required for the life cycle of all mammalian viruses.

Researcher Andrew Poklepovic, who is leading efforts to translate these exciting findings into a clinical trial, said: “AR-12 is an oral therapy that has been well-tolerated in a prior clinical trial, so we know that it is safe and tolerable.

“Most Covid-19 drugs are given intravenously, so this would be a unique therapeutic option and potentially suitable for outpatient therapy, similar to the way one would take an antibiotic,” Poklepovic added.

Poklepovic hopes to begin enrolling patients in early 2021, but several milestones remain.

“For help reaching these significant milestones and moving forward with this research at the accelerated pace that we know is needed, we turned to our colleague at Massey, Said Sebti, who has extensive experience in drug development,” said Poklepovic.

“We are working to submit the required information for US FDA approvals, and we are also in discussions with a local pharmaceutical company to manufacture the drug for the trial,” the study authors wrote.

“We are hopeful that AR-12 will emerge as a treatment option for patients suffering from COVID-19, ultimately saving lives and contributing to the global pandemic solution,” they noted.

Washington: NASA has shared an update on its Artemis programme, including the latest plans to land the first woman and the next man on the surface of the Moon in 2024 at a cost of nearly $28 billion.

However, according to NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, meeting the tight deadline set by the Donald Trump administration would depend a lot on Congress approving $3.2 billion quickly for the development of human-rated lunar landers, according to a report in Spaceflight Now on Monday.

NASA had earlier proposed a plan to return humans to Moon by 2028.

In the 18 months since NASA accepted the “bold” challenge to accelerate its exploration plans by more than four years and establish sustainable exploration by the end of the decade, the agency has continued to gain momentum toward sending humans to the Moon again for the first time since the last Apollo lunar mission in 1972.

“With bipartisan support from Congress, our 21st century push to the Moon is well within America’s reach,” said Bridenstine.

“As we’ve solidified more of our exploration plans in recent months, we’ve continued to refine our budget and architecture. We’re going back to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and inspiration for a new a generation of explorers.”

The NASA Administrator said that the agency is also building momentum “toward those first human steps on the Red Planet.”

The agency’s powerful new rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), and the Orion spacecraft are closer than ever to their first integrated launch, NASA said.

The spacecraft is complete while the core stage and its attached four engines are undergoing a final series of tests that will culminate in a critical hot fire test this autumn.

Following a successful hot fire test, the core stage will be shipped to the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida for integration with the spacecraft.

NASA will launch an SLS and an Orion together on two flight tests around the Moon to check performance, life support, and communication capabilities.

The first mission — known as Artemis I — is on track for 2021 without astronauts, and Artemis II will fly with crew in 2023.

While preparing for and carrying out these flight test missions, NASA already will be back on the Moon robotically – using commercial delivery services to send dozens of new science investigations and technology demonstrations to the Moon twice per year beginning in 2021.

In 2024, Artemis III will be humanity’s return to the surface of the Moon – landing the first astronauts on the lunar South Pole.

After launching on SLS, astronauts will travel about 240,000 miles to lunar orbit aboard Orion, at which point they will directly board one of the new commercial human landing systems, or dock to the Gateway to inspect it and gather supplies before boarding the landing system for their expedition to the surface.

The Gateway will be an outpost orbiting the Moon that provides vital support for a sustainable, long-term human return to the lunar surface, as well as a staging point for deep space exploration.

Wearing modern spacesuits that allow for greater flexibility and movement than those of their Apollo predecessors, astronauts will collect samples and conduct a range of science experiments over the course of nearly seven days.

Using the lander, they will return to lunar orbit before ultimately heading home to Earth aboard Orion, NASA said.

New Delhi:  Heart failure is one of the most under-diagnosed heart diseases in our country, contributing to a high number of death rates. The National Heart Failure Registry recently revealed its one-year data, which shows that close to 17 percent of patients die within 90 days of being diagnosed with heart failure. These high death rates are comparable to mortality associated with cancers of the breast and cervix.

There is lot of ambiguity when it comes to understanding heart failure. The disease is often confused with heart attack, or its symptoms are ignored as signs of old age or other diseases. Currently, it’s the leading cause of mortality and repeat hospitalisations amongst all CVDs, with close to 10 million patients in India, Dr Sandeep Seth, Professor of Cardiology, AIIMS, New Delhi told IANSlife.

What is Heart Failure?

Dr Seth explains, heart failure is a chronic and progressive disease in which the heart muscle weakens or stiffens over time, making it difficult for the heart to pump normally. This leads to symptoms like shortness of breath, need for elevated pillows to breath properly while lying down, swelling in the ankles, legs and abdomen, sudden weight gain and constant tiredness or fatigue.

What causes Heart Failure?

Several comorbid conditions and risk factors can cause heart failure. A prior heart attack is one of the key reasons. Sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, stress, smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, drug usage etc., that leads to lifestyle diseases, increases the risk of developing heart failure in the future. Dr Seth lists the factors.

– Hypertension or high blood pressure makes the heart work harder than it must. Over time, this puts pressure on the heart muscle responsible for the pumping action

– Coronary artery disease: Narrowed arteries limit the supply of oxygen-rich blood. The heart pumps harder to meet the need of the limited blood flow resulting in weakened heart muscle

– Heart attack: Heart attack and Heart Failure are not similar. Heart attack is a sudden cardiac event that has a direct effect on the basic functioning of the heart. A prior heart attack can majorly cause damaged and mean that the heart will never be able to pump as effectively as it did earlier, leading to Heart Failure

– Diabetes: Chronic condition like diabetes increases the risk of high blood pressure and coronary artery disease which in turn increases risk of acute heart failure

– Cardiomyopathy: Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle caused due to alcohol consumption and/or smoking or drug abuse or other yet to be discovered causes

– Obesity: Being overweight increases risk for abnormal heart function and puts one at the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes etc. In the long run, excessive fat deposition can affect the flow of blood through heart muscle, leading to heart failure

– Heart Valves disease: In this ailment, one or more of the valves in your heart doesn’t work properly. This can cause the blood flow through your heart to your body to be disrupted and cause various complications in your body which can lead to heart failure.

– Irregular heartbeats: Abnormal heart rhythms, especially if they are very frequent and fast, weakens the heart muscle and could cause heart failure

It’s advisable to adopt an overall healthy lifestyle. One should exercise on a regular basis, refrain from smoking, drinking or drug abuse and eat healthy and nutritious meals. People should also develop a habit of regular health screening to ensure that any possible heart disease could be diagnosed at an early stage, to ensure timely treatment.

Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal says his vision is to popularise the indigenous martial art kalaripayattu through Indian cinema.

Vidyut is a trained martial artiste and has learnt kalaripayattu since the age of three.

“I don’t have a vision yet about how it should be presented, but my vision for Indian cinema is that people should talk about kalaripayattu, the martial art. It is an original Indian martial art,” Vidyut told IANS.

“When I go and pursue an award from Jackie Chan, and when they talk of kalaripayattu, the Indian martial art, I feel proud. My vision for Indian action cinema worldwide is that we need to present this,” he said about popularising kalaripayattu on screen.

Vidyut, who rose to fame with the “Commando” franchise of films, notes many things that are popular globally today actually originated in India.

“When I lie down on spears, they say, ‘Shaolin monks bhi karte hain (Shaolin monks also do this)’. Shaolin monks isliye karte hain (Shaolin Monks do it) because they learnt it from an Indian guy called Bodhidharma. I just want everybody to be aware. People should know that martial arts is an Indian skill, and that’s my vision,” he said.

The actor was recently seen in the digitally released film, “Khuda Haafiz”. He will next be seen in the film’s second chapter.

Bhubaneswar: There are many hidden talents in the rural pockets of Odisha, who are yet to come to the limelight.

Meet, singing sensation Namita Meleka, a girl from Kui tribe, from Bandhugan in the tribal dominated Koraput district of Odisha.

Namita was noticed by people of Odisha after she was recently seen rendering an old Hindi film number in a TV interview with perfection. It was too exciting as well as astonishing to witness a village girl from a rural pocket of the tribal dominated Koraput district singing a Hindi song with such perfection.

Namita, a Class X student has six siblings. Her father works as a labourer. With his small income he manages the family and study expenditure of six of his daughters.

After knowing about the hidden talent, KIIT and KISS Founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta extended helping hand towards this family. He has offered Namita and her sister to study free of cost in the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar.

As COVID-19 continues to spread globally, one of the cheapest, easiest, and most important ways to protect you and your loved ones   is to wash your hands frequently/ properly with soap and lukewarm water to eliminate all traces of the virus on your hands.

Handwashing remains the No. 1 tip for preventing the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) as it reduces the risk of infecting other people in your community, homes, health care facilities, schools, and other public spaces.

Shahnaz Husain
Shahnaz Husain

Washing your hands properly takes around 20 seconds or about as long as singing “Happy Birthday” twice making the experience quick and pleasant.

An easy way to time it is by singing the full happy birthday song twice, making sure to cover palms, backs of hands, fingers, in between fingers, wrists, and fingernails.

The soap dissolves the fat membrane and the virus falls apart like a house of cards and ‘dies’, or becomes inactive.

During current global pandemic, proper hand washing will not only reduce  the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), but can also prevent the spread of  viral illnesses such as cold and flu and other infections, such SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) etc.

As we diligently wash hands more frequently than usual to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), unfortunately, the very soaps and even wringing of hands underwater will also break down the barrier we are trying to protect.

Frequent hand washing can strip the natural, protective oils in your skin, exacerbate dry skin issues, cause dry, cracked and raw skin that can irritate, flake, itch, crack, and even bleed without proper precautions and also lead to conditions such as eczema.

This can cause open wounds in your skin that can allow in bacteria and other germs and increase your risk for infection through the fissures.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to wash your hands the right way

Actually, the skin on the back of the hands is thin and lacks oil glands. That is why the hands are prone to wrinkles and lines. The nails also become dry and brittle, breaking or chipping easily.

So along with protecting ourselves from the new disease, we also need to protect our hands.

Excessive hand washing can lead to and exacerbate skin issues like pain, redness, flaking and itching. Ironically, by over-washing our skin, we can develop dry cracks in the skin giving bacteria an entry point into our bodies which lead to conditions such as eczema.

The outermost layer of our skin is composed of oils and wax, and it acts as both a shield from the outside and a guard that maintains natural moisture in the skin. This natural barrier is broken down by the suds created by soap while washing hands.

Bath time is appropriate for pampering the hands and supplying them with the oil and moisturizing they need. Before your bath, apply warmed oil on the hands and massage it into the skin. This helps to soften the skin. You can use coconut oil, which is very nourishing. Or, use pure almond oil. Immediately, after your bath, apply a moisturizing lotion or cream, while the skin is still damp. This helps to seal in moisture. Twice a week, have a pre-bath treatment by mixing ground almonds with curd and a pinch of turmeric. Apply on hands.  After 15 minutes, rub the paste gently on the skin and wash it off with water. At night, massage cream on your hands, working it into the skin.

You can also try some home remedies to keep the skin soft and smooth:

Among the many kinds of moisturizers, hand creams are better than body lotion because they are more nourishing. Lotions, which are primarily water-based, can further dry out skin because the water evaporates. Creams, which are often oil-based, are more effective after washing hands.  Once your hands are dry, immediately use a hand cream to seal in the moisture.

Hand soap should also be gentle and fragrance-free.  A luxury treatment for hands: Take four teaspoon almond oil and mix one tablespoon rose water. Add half-teaspoon tincture benzoin, drop by drop. Mix together.  Apply this on the hands. Wear loose cotton socks on the hands and leave on the preparation all night. Rinse off with plain water next morning.

Use hand ointment or cream instead of a lotion as these are more effective. Vaseline is still the most effective moisturizer out there.

Lemon juice and sugar rubbed together with the hands helps to soften the skin.

Take 2 tablespoons sunflower oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 3 tablespoon coarse sugar. Mix together till it becomes a paste. Apply and rub into hands. Wash off after 15 minutes. Do these three times a week.

Take fresh orange peels, pierce them with a fork. Rub the peels on the hands to brighten them.

Choker (wheat bran) and besan (gram flour) can be mixed with turmeric and milk into a paste and applied on the hands. Wash off after 20 minutes. This softens, cleanses and tightens the skin.

Mix almond oil and honey in equal parts and massage into the nails and cuticles.

For dry nails, warm any vegetable oil and soak fingers in it for ten minutes. Wipe off with a moist towel.

A few almonds eaten daily make the nails strong. Include whole grains, yogurt, leafy green vegetables, sprouts and fruits in your diet.

If your skin is sensitive to harsh chemicals then you should handle cleaning supplies while wearing gloves.

One-teaspoon Brewer’s yeast added to one glass of fresh fruit juice also keeps the nails and skin in good condition.

At night-time before going to bed, apply thick moisturizer and then cover with cotton gloves to increase absorption.   Consider a humidifier at night—raising the humidity level in a room can help dry skin.

Germs spread more easily from wet skin than from dry skin, so drying your hands completely is an important step. Paper towels or clean clothes are the most effective way to remove germs without spreading them to other surfaces.

Sambalpur: The prime deity of Western Odisha, Goddess Samaleswari wore the very famous ‘Dhabalmukhi Besha’ on Thursday on the occasion of Mahalaya. Importantly, the Goddess wears this attire only once in a year while on other days across the year she wears the ‘Sindurabarna’ besha.

Goddess Samaleswari of Sambalpur in Odisha wore the Dhabalmukhi besha today. Dhabala means white and ‘mukh’ means face. Hence, the Goddess is today available for darshan in the white attire, which is compared with River Ganga. It is believed that when devotees have a glimpse of the Goddess in the Dhabalmukhi besha they can be blessed with the virtue of having Ganga Darshan.

However, since due to Covid 19 restrictions, the temple is these days not open for public, devotees can have the same on the online platform.

It is believed that on the last day of the Pitru Pakshya if someone gets the glimpse of the Goddess in Dhabalmukhi besha, she also gets the virtue of Ganga darshan and accordingly his ancestors get peace in their heavenly abode.

The sensitivity of the main test carried out to detect the corona virus is under questions by scientists, as they show positive results even for dead corona virus fragments.

Most people could infect others for about a period of a week whereas can test positive even after several weeks have passed. This has forced researchers to conclude that this could be the reason leading to the over-estimation of current scale of growth of the pandemic.

Prof Carl Heneghan reportedly said, “Instead of giving a (Yes/No) result based on whether any virus is detected or not, tests should rather have a cut-off point so that a very small amount of virus does not trigger any positive case.”

He believes the detection of traces of old virus could partly be the reason why the number of cases is rising while hospital admissions remain stable.

As reports say, the University of Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine reviewed the evidence from 25 studies where virus specimens from positive tests were put into a petri dish to see whether they would grow.

This method of ‘viral culturing’ can indicate whether the positive test has picked up active virus which can be infectious by reproducing and spreading, or just dead virus fragments which wouldn’t grow in the laboratory, or in any human body.

Public Health England community agreed viral cultures were a useful way of assessing the results of coronavirus tests and said it had recently undertaken analysis along these lines.

It said it was working with labs to reduce the risk of false positives, including looking at where the “cycle threshold”, or cut-off point, should be set.

However, a great alternative to your expensive beauty products in the market is fruit face packs which are quite effective, have no side effects and are cost efficient. The homemade fruit face pack is natural and easy to make so, which gives you clear, smooth and glowing skin with regular use. Fruit packs are great for adding radiance to the skin. They can also be applied daily.

Here are some fruit face packs that help you achieve a beautiful glowing:

Mango:

Mango is rich in Vitamins A and C, E and a host of skin rejuvenating formulas. Mango contains antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory effects on your skin. It softens, nourishes and brightens the skin.

Take 3 tablespoons Mango pulp and mix with one teaspoon each ground almonds, oats and lemon juice. Apply on the face, avoiding the lips and area around eyes. Wash off after 20 to 30 minutes. Take slices of ripe mango. Mash it until it is smooth. Add one teaspoon full of multani mitti (fuller’s earth) and make a thick, smooth paste. Apply this paste to your skin around face and neck and wash it off after 30 minutes to get supple and glowing skin.

Ripe Papaya:

Papaya has so many benefits that it is used to be called “the food of the angels.” It is a rich source of antioxidants, like Vitamins A, C and B, folate and pantothenic acid, as well as minerals like potassium, copper, and magnesium.

Papaya contains papain, an enzyme, which helps to soften and remove dead skin cells, making the skin clearer and brighter. Mix 3 teaspoons ripe papaya with 3 teaspoons oats and one teaspoon each curd and honey. Leave on for 20 to 30 minutes and wash off with water. It softens the skin and adds a glow.

Alternatively mash few slices of ripe papaya until it is smooth. Add few drops of honey and lemon juice to make thick paste. Apply the paste on the face for 30 minutes and wash it off with fresh clean water. Take two pieces of papaya and one tablespoon of honey. Blend the papaya into a nice, smooth pulp and add the honey to it. Once you have gotten a thick consistency, apply the mixture on the face and wash it off with cold plain water after 30 minutes and apply moisturizer for glowing, radiant and supple skin.

Mix together one tablespoon each grated apples, ripe papaya pulp and mashed banana. Add oats to make a mixture that does not drip. Apply it on the face, avoiding the lips and area around eyes. Leave it on for half an hour. Wash off with plain water. It not only adds a glow, but also cleanses the skin and removes tan.

Banana:

Banana is one of the richest sources of potassium and also contains Vitamin C and B6, silica, potassium, and other nutrients. Banana is extremely nourishing for the skin, not only due to its vitamin content, but also because potassium helps to soften the skin. It helps clear hyperpigmentation and protects the skin from sun damage. It is a perfect ingredient for dry and sensitive skin.

It also tightens and tones the skin. Banana pulp can be added to egg white and one teaspoon honey. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then wash it off. Almond oil may also be added to the pack, especially during the dry winter season.

Alternatively you can take one banana, one tsp honey and few drops of lemon juice. Mash the banana and add honey and lemon juice to apply the paste on your face and other areas of the skin. Leave it and wash it off after 30 minutes. Avoid using lemon juice if you have dry and sensitive skin.

Apples:

Apples contain a wealth of vitamins and minerals. Apples are wonderful skin tones that help to tighten the skin and stimulate blood circulation to the skin surface. Apple contains vitamin C that helps build collagen. It contains powerful antioxidants and polyphenols that protect your skin from UV damage and ageing.

Apples also contain fruit acids, which have a powerful cleansing effect on the skin, removing dead skin cells. This helps to brighten the skin and gradually clear away blemishes, like dark spots. In fact, it helps to achieve healthy, glowing and youthful skin.

Raw apple pulp or apple juice can be applied on the skin daily and then washed off with plain water after 20 minutes. Grated apple can be added to face masks. Mix oats with curd, honey and apple pulp or grated apple into a paste. Apply on the face and wash it off after 20 to 30 minutes. Grate few slices of apple, with its skin removed and add a few drops of honey to make it a paste. Apply the paste onto your face and uncovered areas like hands, elbows etc. Wash it off with warm water after 30 minutes.

Alternatively Take one apple and few grapes and blend both apples and grapes to get smooth, soft paste. Apply it on face and open around face and let it dry in natural environment. Wash it with clean, fresh water and pat dry. If you have dry skin, do not use this remedy as vitamin C can dry out your skin further.

Pomegranate:

Pomegranates are a rich source of Vitamin C and antioxidants. They have excellent benefits for skin care, as they help to moisturize the skin.

Pomegranate also helps to improve the skin’s moisture retention ability. Used regularly on the face, it can remove tan, lighten skin colour and also brighten the skin.

Pomegranate juice can be mixed with lemon juice in equal quantities and applied on the face. Rinse off after 20 minutes with water. Pomegranate peel can be dried and powdered and used in face packs. Mix two teaspoons each pomegranate peel powder and fuller’s earth (multani mitti) with enough rose water to make a paste. Apply on the face, avoiding the lips and area around eyes. Wash off when it dries.

Grapefruit (Chakotra):

Both pink and red grapefruits are said to be rich in Vitamin A, carotene and lycopene. They are also rich in Vitamins C & A, as well as potassium and magnesium. Additionally they contain B-Complex Vitamins and minerals such as iron, calcium, copper and phosphorus. Like other citrus fruits, grapefruit also has a cleansing and toning effect on the skin. It is particularly good for oily and pimple prone skin. It reduces oiliness and also helps to reduce tan over a period of time. Grapefruit also helps oily skin problems like open pores and helps to tighten them. Mix the juice with oats to make a paste and apply on the face. Wash off when it dries. It helps to remove blackheads.
