Rupee Surges 9 Paise To 71.15 Against Dollar

Mumbai: The rupee surged by 9 paise to 71.15 against the U.S. dollar in opening trade on Thursday, amid a positive opening in domestic equities and weakening greenback in overseas markets.

The domestic unit gained further and touched 71.13 amid falling crude oil prices, registering a gain of 11 paise over its previous close. The rupee had plunged by 19 paise to close at 71.24 against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday.

Forex dealers opined that easing crude oil prices and selling of the American currency by exporters helped the domestic unit strengthen against the American unit. However, sustained foreign fund outflows, restricted the appreciation spree of rupee.

The benchmark BSE Sensex was trading with gains of 79.29 points, or 0.22% at 36,400.58 while the NSE Nifty was trading at 10,913.95, up 23.65 points, or 0.22%.

Meanwhile, Brent crude, the global benchmark, was trading lower at 61.04 per barrel lower by 0.46%.
