Maruti Suzuki unwilling to offer diesel vehicles in the future, Know why

Maruti Suzuki, the leading manufacturer of cars in India has ruled out the option to enter the diesel segment in the upcoming future. The automaker has clarified that it will be focussing more on the Petrol vehicles and will stay away from diesel segment vehicle. Maruti will rather focus on increasing the efficiency of the petrol vehicles. The introduction of the 2021 Maruti Celerio has proved the company’s inclination towards increasing the efficiency of Petrol vehicles. Maruti claims that the new Celerio offers an excellent mileage of 26.68 kmpl.

During an interaction with PTI, the company’s chief technical officer, CV Raman told that, the reason for staying away from diesel vehicles is the upcoming emission norms in 2023. The sale of diesel vehicle will be significantly reduced after the introduction of next phase of emission norms in 2023. The gradual decline in the number of diesel vehicles will push the sale of petrol vehicles even more. As the emission norms will get stricter, the company has decided to stay away from diesel vehicles, the company added.

Recent estimates in the vehicle industry have revealed that the share of diesel vehicles in India is currently less than 17 per cent of total passenger vehicle sales. The change can be considered contrasting as the diesel cars used to occupy 60 per cent of total vehicle sales in 2013-14. However, after the implementation of BS6 emission norms from April 1, 2020 many automakers including Maruti have not updates the diesel variants of popular models.

Currently Maruti Suzuki offers 15 cars in India which include SUV, sedan and hatchback. The Maruti Alto 800 is the cheapest car offered by the company and it can be purchased at a starting price of Rs 3.15 lakh (ex-showroom). The most common petrol engines offered by Maruti Suzuki are 1.0-litre, 1.2- litre and 1.5-litre. The option for CNG is also available across some models of the manufacturer. We hope that Maruti increases its R&D (Research and Development) in the Petrol engine and makes them more fuel efficient in the near future.
