ICICI Bank has reversed its plan to increase the minimum average balance (MAB) for new savings account holders in metro and urban areas. The bank had originally planned to raise the MAB to a staggering Rs 50,000, but the figure has now been reduced minimum balance requirement to Rs 15,000. This came after a massive outcry from customers and potential account holders.

The bank had recently updated the MAB for new accounts opened on and after August 1, 2025, to Rs 50,000 for metro and urban branches, Rs 25,000 for semi-urban branches, and Rs 10,000 for rural branches. But owing to huge backlash, ICICI Bank has now decided to lower the MAB for new customers in urban areas to Rs 15,000 and in semi-urban areas to Rs 7,500.

Existing semi-urban and rural customers will continue to enjoy the old MAB of Rs 5,000. This move is a reflection of ICICI Bank’s attempt to match customer needs and demands. In case customers do not hold the minimum required MAB, they will be levied 6% of the deficiency or Rs 500, whichever is less.

Other Indian banks have comparatively lower MAB requirements. The revised MAB requirements of ICICI Bank intend to achieve a balance between the bank’s operational needs and customer demands.
