The Ambassador car which was manufactured by Hindustan Motors was one of the most iconic Indian cars ever made in our country. The Ambassador was not just a car but a status symbol during its peak days. Even though the car has been discontinued, a mere glimpse of the vehicle gives us a nostalgic vibe about good old days.

The Ambassador car is expected to be launched in India in a very new avatar, says Media reports. The reports further state that the car will be relaunched as an electric car and not as an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) variant. Hindustan Motors will be collaborating with another European manufacturer in order to produce the Ambassador car. The collaboration of Hindustan Motors along with the European brand will be in 51:49 ratio. This means that the controlling stake will be with the Hindustan Motors.

The Hindustan Motors had sold the Ambassador model along with brand and rights to the Peugeot for Rs 80 crore. It was further reported that the Hindustan Motors will collaborate with Peugeot for producing electric vehicles, added the reports.

The Ambassador electric car will be manufactured in the Hindustan Motors plant that is located in Chennai, said sources. According to reports, the last Ambassador car rolled out from Hindustan Motors’ plant in Uttarpara of West Bengal in September 2014.

For those who have grown up in the 1970s and 1990s, the Ambassador was a common car on the streets. It was mainly because; the major car manufacturers had not entered the Indian market. However, as there was a boom for Maruti cars in the 1990s in the Indian market, the sales of Hindustan Motors declined. It was mainly because, Maruti cars were not only easy to maintain but also cheaper as compared to Hindustan Motors. However, we are excited that one of the iconic cars of India is making a comeback as an electric vehicle.
