Amazon Web Services lay off hundreds of employees from tech, sales department

Amazon has made it to the recent headlines for multiple layoffs from various departments. Now, Amazon announced the layoff of hundreds of employees from its cloud computing department, AWS (Amazon Web Services).

As spoken by a spokesperson of AWS, this move aims to streamline the few targeted areas which have been identified. Over the past couple of months, the parent company Amazon has laid off hundreds of employees in numerous divisions. This including from Prime Video, Healthcare, and Alexa Voice Assistant.

As per the information received, over 55,000 workers have been laid off across 229 firms in 2023.

Earlier this month, it was also reported that Amazon would not give a salary hike to its senior employees.

AWS senior vice president Matt Garman told Geekwire, “We operate in an incredibly fast-moving industry, and it is important that we stay agile as an organization. The changes we are making are preparing the organization for the future; aligning with our strategy and priorities, and reducing duplication and inefficiency. I recognize the effect this has on every individual impacted.”

He even added the company is committed to help the impacted employees during their period of transition to new roles.

Vice President of AWS Applications Dilip Kumar said, “We have learnt a lot through the launch of identity and checkout technologies in our large format Amazon Fresh stores. And have good customer feedback to inform you plans going forward. We are also expanding our identity and check out technologies in smaller-format 1P stores, and growing our third party locations.”

Meanwhile, AWS also informed that the company is also trying to make attempts and find internal opportunities for the employees who have been laid off. This is because currently, Amazon has a lot of other vacancies.
