Yamaha RD350 might make a comeback as RZ350

The two-wheeler market has seen a high demand in the middleweight bike segment. Many automakers have plans to introduce their products keeping in users demand. Popular retro bike maker Royal Enfield currently holds a market share of more than 3/4 of all middleweight motorcycles. Yamaha seems to be working on a similar approach.

Yamaha trademarked RZ250 and RZ350 in Japan in April 2023. Considering the craze for retro bikes in India, the company might introduce the RZ250 and RZ350 in India as well. However, reports have suggested that the legendary RD350, which was available in India during the 80s and 90s, might make a comeback as the RZ350.

The Yamaha RD350 was hugely popular for its classic design and powerful performance. Even today, it  still enjoys a cult following in India.

Yamaha RD350 is one of the most popular bikes of the company. Even though the RD350 was stopped being produced decades ago, it still have fans who are still riding it.

According to reports citing trademark applications in Japan, the RZ350 and RZ250 names may one day be used again. This event naturally raises the possibility that the Yamaha RD350 brand may also return, particularly in India. The RD350 is still regarded as a classic in the history of Indian two-wheelers.

However, other details are not available at this point of time. OEMs often trademark names, but it is not a guarantee that those products will make it to production stage. With limited information available, it is difficult to say what Yamaha is planning with the RZ350 and RZ250 trademarks.

What to expect?

The RD350 might be reintroduced as modern classic. It will probably have a four-stroke engine and a updated equipment list. For instance, the bike might have a Bluetooth connection, dual-channel ABS, an LED headlight with DRL, a digital instrument dashboard, traction control with an assist, and a slipper clutch. The hardware will also be upgraded in line with current expectations and in compliance with stricter emission norms.

The Yamaha RD350 was offered with a 347cc air-cooled engine that produced a maximum power of 39 horsepower. It comes paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The pulsing performance of the two-stroke parallel twin motor made it very well known for its pulsing performance. It will rival the likes of Royal Enfield 350cc range, Honda H’ness CB350, Jawa / Yezdi, and upcoming Bajaj-Triumph and Hero-Harley bikes.
