Production of iconic ‘Hyundai Santro’ hatchback car discontinued in India
Hyundai Santro has been one of the iconic hatchbacks on the Indian roads. First introduced in the year 1998, the Santro had a significant impact on the Indian audience. However, with due course of time the hatchback could not keep track with the competition and the sales declined gradually. Keeping the factors in mind, the production of Santro has been discontinued in India.
The current generation of Hyundai Santro was launched in the year 2018. The company had huge hopes from the hatchback. The first generation of the Hyundai Santro (launched in 1998) had a huge success in terms of sales as the tall-boy design and other features of the car were well liked by the audience. The first generation of the Santro was considered as a good alternative to Maruti Suzuki cars in India. However, when the second generation of Hyundai Santro was launched the car had a huge competition from many cars manufacturers apart from Maruti Suzuki. Various small cars from manufacturers like Renault, Tata, Ford, Chevrolet offered small cars that were direct competitors of the Santro.
Even though the maintenance of Santro was relatively inexpensive, the potential buyers opted for Maruti Suzuki for its services and maintenance charges.
The Santro is offered in Petrol as well as CNG variant. A 1.1L 4 cylinder engine churns out a maximum power of 50.7 kW (69PS) @5500 rpm. On the other hand the maximum torque figure of the engine is 99 Nm/ 4500 rpm. Similarly, the CNG variant offers a maximum power of 44kW (60 PS) @ 5500 rpm. The maximum torque offered is 85.3 Nm@ 4500 rpm.
The dimensions of the hatchback is 3610mm x 1645mm x 1560mm (length x width x height). The wheelbase of the Santro is 2400 mm. The safety features on the hatchback include rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, rear defogger, speed sensing auto door lock, dual airbags, ABS with EBD etc.
The ex-showroom price of Hyundai Santro varies from Rs 4,89,700 and Rs 6,41,600 (ex-showroom New Delhi).
