MG Comet EV has been launched in India at Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The Comet EV sits in a segment of its own. The company has scheduled to start the test drives from April 27. While the bookings will begin on May 15 and the deliveries to commence later that month.

MG is targeting buyers looking for a city runabout with a small footprint. The EV is based on Wuling Air EV and has a 17.3kWh battery.

MG Comet EV exterior

The MG Comet EV is based on Wuling Air EV. It sports a boxy design language and features a full-width LED light bar, which MG calls the Extended Horizon connecting lights. A strip of chrome and piano black connects both wing mirrors. On the front, the EV contains the charging port under the light bar and an illuminated MG logo.

The Comet EV rides on 12-inch alloy wheels, which is said to be the smallest wheel size on any vehicle available in the market currently. It also gets an asymmetrical window design, with the rear windows mounted vertically. The Comet EV features the Extended Horizon connecting lights at the rear too. The company has introduced the EV in a total of five colours with multiple graphics packs categorised under sticker styles and lit packs.

MG Comet EV interior and features

Inside the cabin, the Comet EV sports a white and grey interior with two 10.25-inch screens – one for the infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The second screen is for the digital instrument cluster. The front passenger seat has a one-touch tumble and fold feature and the rear seat has a 50:50 split feature. The Comet also features a rotary drive selector.

The other features of the Comet EV are manual AC controls, keyless entry, steering-mounted controls, three USB ports and over 55 connected features.

The safety duties are maintained by ABS, EBD, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), reverse camera and sensors as well as dual front airbags.

MG Comet EV powertrain, battery and dimensions

MG Comet EV is powered by a 17.3kWh battery that has an ARAI-certified range of 230km. The battery is IP67-rated for water and dust resistance. MG is also offering a 3.3kW onboard charger that takes seven hours to fully charge the battery. MG has sourced the battery from Tata AutoComp.

The Comet is equipped with a single electric motor that draws power from the battery to produce 42hp and 110Nm of torque. It sends power to the rear wheels via an automatic gearbox. It measures 2,974mm in length, 1,505mm in width and 1,640mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,010mm. To put its size into perspective, the other small car available in India, the Alto K10, is 556mm longer than the Comet EV.

MG Comet EV rivals

The MG Comet EV will rival the likes of the Tata Tiago EV (Rs 8.69 lakh-11.99 lakh) and the Citroen eC3 (Rs 11.50 lakh-12.43 lakh), both prices ex-showroom.
