Asian Para Games: Jayanti shines again, wins silver medal for India in 400m sprint

Bhubaneswar/Jakarta: Adding another feather to her cap Odia para athlete Jayanti Behera bagged a silver medal at the ongoing Asian Para Games 2018 at Jakarta of Indonesia.

While participating in 400 meter sprint in the T45/46/47 classification yesterday, Jayanti clocked 59.71 seconds two clinch her medal. Li Lu of China topped the competition in the same category and won gold medal with a timing of 58.39 seconds while Shigemoto Sae of Japan clocked 59.74 seconds to get bronze medal.

This is the second medal for Behera in the competition as she bagged the bronze in the women’s 200m T45/46/47 event which is for athletes with limb impairment two days ago. She clocked a timing of 27.45 seconds to finish the race. China’s Li Lu with 25.82 seconds and Wang Yanping with 26.45 seconds grabbed the first and the second positions in the same event.

A gold medallist in China Open Para Athletic Grand Prix Championship held in May, last year, Behera has also bagged silver medal in 100-meter race at the Asian Youth Para Games-2017 in Dubai. Later she topped in 400-metre event at the World Junior Para Athletic Championships held in Nottwil, Switzerland in August in the same year to bring home gold.

Born in Sakhigopal in 1999, Behera suffered burn injury on her left hand and waist at the age of 1. However, she managed to become a successful athlete by fighting against all odds.
