Islamabad: Former cricketer Imran Khan took oath as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan on Saturday, more than two decades after he entered politics.

Sixty-five year old Khan, Chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was administered the oath of office by President Mamnoon Hussain at a simple ceremony held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr (the President House) here today.

Khan was elected as Prime Minister in a vote at the country’s National Assembly on Friday. His PTI party had emerged as the single largest party in last month’s election but it fell short of outright majority.

Members of the 1992 cricket World Cup winning team that Mr Khan captained to victory watched the ceremony alongside senior PTI figures and military officials.

Former Indian cricketer and Punjab’s Tourism Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu was also present on the occasion.
