Chile’s Ex-President Bachelet to be new UN human rights chief

New York: Former President of Chile Michelle Bachelet has been appointed as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The UN General Assembly approved her appointment here last night.  She will succeed Jordanian diplomat Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein.

Bachelet said, she was honoured to be the next UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

“Deeply humbled and honored to announce my acceptance as the UN’s new High Commissioner for Human Rights,” Bachelet tweeted.

“I will execute this role with all my strength, energy and conviction. This work looks to bring dignity and wellbeing to all people,” she added in a video posted on social media.

Bachelet most recently served as President of Chile from 2014 to 2018, and 2006 to 2010. She was the first Executive Director of UN-Women between 2010 and 2013.

Bachelet will be the seventh High Commissioner since the Office was created in 1993.
