Balasore: A woman committed suicide by setting herself on fire at Purbapada village under Khaira Police Station area in the district today over a family feud. However, her family members blamed her in-laws for the incident and claimed she was being tortured for dowry.
The deceased has been identified as Chandrakanti Khatua, wife of Jamini Kanta Khatua.
Chandrakanti took the extreme step this morning while her husband was away in some work. After sprinkling Kerosene on herself the victim set her ablaze. She was rushed to Khaira CHC by some neghbours and then shifted to Bhadrak Medical following the incident. She died under treatment later in the day due to severe burn injuries.
Following the death of the victim her brother Prafulla Nayak claimed that she was under pressure from husband and in-laws to bring more dowry from home. She might have been killed by the in-laws, he added.
While Khaira Police have seized the body and lodged a case in the incident, nobody has been arrested so far.
