Berhampur: People in Sanakhemundi area in Ganjam district have been in a state of panic for the last two days as a herd of wild elephants caused extensive damage to the standing vegetables and cattle sheds in the region.

Today, as many as six wild elephants were reportedly seen at a chilli field near Adapada village.

The villagers, who have been worried over the wild elephant menace, resorted to chasing away the elephants by beating drums and bursting crackers.

The forest officials have asked the locals to stay at safer places and not to attack the jumbos.

“Efforts are being made to drive away the elephants into the jungle”, said an official.
