New Delhi: In the 35th edition of Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an obvious reference to the violence in Haryana and Punjab on Friday, has said that violence in the name of faith can’t be tolerated and those taking the law into their hands won’t be spared.

Violence broke out in Haryana and Punjab on Friday after the Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted of rape by a special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana. Around 36 people were killed and more than 200 were injured after the mob in Panchkula ran amok. The violence soon spread to other places in Haryana and elsewhere.

Modi said that India is the land of Gandhi and Buddha and violence in any form is not acceptable in the nation. He further added that whether faith is based on political ideology, community, individual or tradition, violence won’t be tolerated under any circumstances.

Taking a strong stand on the issue, he stated that the Constitution of India provides law for redressal of grievances and all those responsible for breaking law have to ultimately bow before the law.

”I want to assure the country that no country, no government can tolerate anyone taking the law into hands. Everybody will have to bow before the law. The law will determine accountability and the guilty will be punished,’’ said Modi.

Modi also spoke about the National Sports Talent Search Portal, which will be officially launched by the Vice-President Venkiah Naidu at the Indira Gandhi Indoor stadium in New Delhi on Monday. He also asked the children to be out playing on fields rather than spending time on play stations.
