Villagers rescue 6 feet long crocodile from pond in Malkangiri

Malkangiri: In a daredevilry act, residents in MV-78 village under Tigal panchayat in the district rescued a large crocodile from a pond and handed over it to forest officials after the later refused to help them in the effort.

The caught reptile has been identified as a Marsh Crocodile with a length of over 6 feet.

As per the report, the residents of MV-78 village had lodged a complaint with forest department a few days ago after the crocodile was spotted in a village pond. It was being suspected that the reptile had sneaked into the pond from an adjoining river. However, the forest officials had left the fate of the crocodile to the villagers at a later stage, after making a failed attempt to catch it.

A team of villagers comprising of Anand Halder, Uttam Poddar, Apurba Mandal, Uttam Biswas, and Asim Poddar installed a fishnet to caught hold of the crocodile at around 6 AM this morning.

Residents were living under constant fear due to the presence of the reptile in the pond, which prompted us to take the step, said a villager.
