Sambalpur: At least two persons including a woman were trampled to death by a wild tusker in Makarchuan village under Charmal police limits in the district last night.

The deceased have been identified as Deimati Bhoi and Sambhu Bhoi.

A herd of wild elephants barged into the village late in the night to consume paddy and attacked Deimati’s house. In a bid to reach to the paddy bags stored inside the warehouse they started vandalising the walls of the house. As Deimati yelled at the jumbos to drive them out, a tusker lifted her with its trunk and trampled her to death after throwing on the ground. Later, another jumbo pounced on Sambhu and killed him on the spot.

Local Police and Muchibahal Forest Range officials reached the spot this morning and rushed the bodies for autopsy to Redhakhol Medical.

An ex-gratia of Rs 40,000 has also been paid to the kin of the deceased duo by the forest department.
