Tusker tramples man to death in Cuttack village

Cuttack: In yet another case of man-animal conflict in the state, a middle-aged man has been trampled to death by a wild jumbo in Salijanga village under Tigiria police limits in the district on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Shyam Mohanty (42) of the same village.

As per the sources, Shyam visited his farmland where he has raised brinjal along with a group of villagers early in the morning. However, much to their bad luck while picking brinjals they came across a wild tusker which had sneaked into the area last night.

While all others managed to escape from the spot after finding the jumbo nearby, Shaym fall prey to the animal which crushed him to death in minutes.

Tension ran high in the village after angry locals gheraoed a team of forest officials who arrived at the spot to take stock of the situation. Locals demanded compensation to the deceased’s kin.

Meanwhile, the forest department has declared a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for Shyam’s family under the existing government provision. However, it has maintained that the amount would be given only after the receipt of the autopsy report.
