Thunderstorm alert sounded for 17 Odisha districts

Bhubaneswar: Forecasting heavy rainfall in one or two places over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Dhenkanal districts of the state over the next 24 hours, the Regional Meteorological Centre issued thunderstorm and lightning warning for 17 districts between 3.45 pm and 7.45 pm.

The districts likely to be affected are Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Kandhamal, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Khordha (including Bhubaneswar), Cuttack, Nayagarh, Puri and Bhadrak.

People have been cautioned to stay indoors and take shelter in safe locations.

The chief amounts of rainfall have been recorded in Kantapada Block of Cuttack district (111.0 mm) followed by 84.6 mm in Balipatna Block of Khordha district, 71.0 mm in Kanas Block and 70.0 mm in Krushnaprasad Block of Puri district.

On the other hand, a low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours, stated a release issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar.  “A cyclonic circulation is most likely to form over the North Bay of Bengal August 18 and concentrate into a low pressure in the next 24 hours the following day,” said the release.
