Bhubaneswar: In a major setback for self-styled godman Sarathi Baba aka Santosh Raul, the Supreme Court of India rejected his bail plea on Wednesday.

A two-member division bench of the apex court headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi rejected Sarathi Baba’s bail plea in connection with the case of sexual exploitation of a woman and her daughter at his Barimula Ashram situated in Kendrapara district.

Odisha Crime Branch had arrested the controversial self-styled godman in August 2015 and had charged him with forgery, cheating and criminal intimidation.

Later, a woman and her daughter had lodged a complaint that Sarathi Baba, who is currently lodged in Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttak, had sexually exploited them and even defrauded them of their money and jewellery and even land.

After the lower courts rejected his bail plea, Sarathi had moved Supreme Court on December 2015 seeking bail in the the case.

The Orissa High Court had granted him bail in the case of alleged sexual harassment of the controversial female medico on August 4, 2017. However, he could not get out of the jail as the mother-daughter case against him is sub judice.
