Nayagarh: In a freak mishap, at least one youth sustained burn injury and an equal number turned critical while lighting pyre of a deceased in Manik Patna village under Nuagaon block in Nayagarh district last night.
The critically injured youth has been identified as Kartik Nayak of the same village.
The incident took place at the village cremation ground after Kartik along with six others in the locality reached there carrying body of a man who died late in the night. While lighting the pyre someone from the pallbearers’ group threw a kerosene jar on the fire which exploded suddenly.
Fire caught Kartik immediately following the explosion as he was standing closer to the pyre. Another youth in the group who tried to save him also sustained burn injuries in the explosion.
The victim duo was rushed to the Nayagarh DHH immediately where Kartik’s condition deteriorated further.
Police are investigating into the incident.
