Bhubaneswar: The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs seized gold weighing 295 grams from a passenger at Biju Patnaik International Airport here on Thursday morning. This is the second such seizure in the past one week.

The cylindrical gold bar was recovered from a passenger from New Delhi after he arrived on Air India flight AI-339 from Bangkok. “The passenger had wrapped the bar with black adhesive and concealed those in their rectum. The value of the gold is Rs 9.29 lakh,” read the press release.

On Saturday, customs sleuths had recovered a gold Kada and one gold chain weighing 249.350 grams and valued at Rs 7,91,686 from a passenger from hailing Mohali, Punjab. Notably, this is the third such incident in June.

Sources said, in most of such cases, the smugglers carry out such activities in airports that are new in operating international operations. Sources said most of the gold was being smuggled from Bangkok by organised rackets who adopt innovative ways to smuggle gold.
