Sambalpur: BJD’s Rengali MLA Ramesh Patua has set an example for the society by turning a pallbearer for the unclaimed body of an elderly man.

According to reports, an elderly man was living by begging in Amanapali area of the district for the last several years. After his death on Wednesday, nobody neither claimed nor shouldered it, allegedly because he was a beggar, to the cemetery ground to perform the last rites.

The body was unattended for about 24 hours. However, on being informed about the incident, the Rengali MLA reached the spot with his two sons and shouldered the body to the graveyard and cremated it as per the Vedic rituals.

“After I was informed about the matter over the phone, I reached at the spot along with my two sons and carried the body to the graveyard. We also conducted the last rites as per the Vedic rituals,” said Patua.

The sense of humanity of Patua, who proved that everyone should be, either poor or rich, given a dignified burial, has been highly hailed by the people across the district.

“Our Rengali MLA has set an example for everyone. We must learn from him and attend bodies of even the unidentified persons and conduct the last rites with great respect on the humanitarian ground,” Kanhu Charan Mishra, a local.
