Odisha Budget Session: Opposition to corner Govt on several issues

Bhubaneswar: The Budget session of the Odisha Assembly, which will commence here tomorrow, is likely to begin on a stormy note as the opposition parties have prepared to corner the Naveen Government over several issues including farmers’ plight and law and order situation.

Addressing media persons at the party office here after the BJP legislature party meeting, Padampur MLA Pradip Purohit said, “In the budget session, we will raise the issue of farmers’ plight and State Government’s inability to address farmers’ issues among others.”

“In recent past, as many as six farmers committed suicide. The State Government has failed to distribute input subsidy to the farmers which was sent by the Centre through SDRF funds. The farmers have not received the crop insurance amount,” the BJP MLA complained.

The saffron leader also pointed out that, the State Government had formed “Biju Yuva Vahini” on taxpayers’ money but it has allegedly been engaged to promote the political activities of ruling party. “We will raise such issues among others,” he said.

The main opposition party Congress has also decided to raise the issues of deteriorating law and order, farmers’ plight, rising unemployment, drinking water crisis among others.

Earlier on the day, Leader of Opposition and Congress veteran Narasingha Mishra said, “We would raise issues like acute shortage of drinking water, large scale vacancies in the posts of doctor and teacher in rural areas and anti-farmer policies of the State Government during the session.”

Meanwhile, BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is scheduled to chair the BJD legislature party meeting this evening to discuss the party’s strategy to counter the opposition attack.

The session will continue till May 5 in two phases: the first part will continue from March 20 to March 31 and the second from April 11 to May 5.

Finance Minister Shashi Bhusan Behera will present the state’s annual budget for the year 2018-19 on March 23.
