Will not to contest next election: Odisha LoO Narasinghpur MishraBhubaneswar: Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoO) in Odisha Assembly Narasingha Mishra on Thursday announced that he will not contest the next general election, but will remain active in politics.

Mishra, the sitting MLA from Bolangir assembly constituency, cited the age factor as the reason behind his decision not to be a candidate for the next general election.

“I have made up my mind not to contest next election as I will be 79 by then,” said the veteran politician while speaking to the reporters. “An elected people’s representative has to reach the people. Will people not come to him and will he not pay heed to their problems? Hence, can a leader of 79-80 age reach the people? I don’t think at such an age, one can do enough to work actively for the people,” he added.

Mishra further stated, “This is not my maiden statement on the issue. I had revealed it much earlier when I had participated in a panel discussion on a TV channel. I had also sent an email to AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi saying that it’s not proper for a politician to fight election after 70.

Countering a media report on his retirement published today, the veteran politician said, “It’s a wrong news. I’m born in politics and will stay in politics till death.”
