Man drowns to death after falling into Bhubaneswar drain

Bhubaneswar: Adding to the monsoon woes in the state capital Bhubaneswar, a 55-year-old man was drowned to death after accidentally falling into an open drain near Maa Mangala slum in Ganganagar area yesterday.

The victim has been identified as Harihar Patnaik (55), a resident of Maa Mangala slum under Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Ward No. 46.

Harihar, who was standing near the open drain flowing near his house and was trying to cross it when lost balance and plunged into it. Two minor boys who were present near the spot tried to rescue him but failed in their attempt due to the heavy flow of water.

Fire officials rescued the victim from the drain in a critical condition later and admitted to the Capital Hospital where he died under treatment.

Locals have held BMC responsible for the incident as it had left the drain open during monsoon season and demanded immediate redressal of the grievance.
