Man critical in wild tusker attack in Angul village

Angul: In another incident of man-animal conflict in Odisha, a farmer sustained critical injury in elephant attack in Talagarh village under Bantala Forest Range in the district on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Sarat Chandra Sethi of the same village.

Sethi who set out on his journey to Bantala market to sell vegetables early in the morning came across a wild tusker on his way. The jumbo pounced on the victim and attacked him with its tusks to inflict grievous injuries on head, hand and leg.

The victim was rescued by some locals after the jumbo returned into to the nearby forest. He was rushed to Angul DHH later.

Tension gripped the village following the incident as angry locals detained forest officials who had reached there to take stock of the situation. They were allowed to leave only after giving an assurance to provide compensation to the family of the victim under existing government provision.

The forest department has directed its officials to keep a tight vigil on the elephant movement in and around the village.
