TrainBhubaneswar: East Coast Railways (ECoR) on Wednesday suspended a Station Master for allegedly misdirecting the Puri-Lokmanya Tilak Super-Fast Express leading to the Mumbai-bound train veering off its route and travelling almost 4 km in the wrong direction on Tuesday night.

Station Master of Machapur railway station Chandrabhanu Samal has been suspended for dereliction of duty following a prima facie report in connection with the Puri-Lokmanya Tilak mishap. An inquiry into the incident has also been ordered by the Railways authorities.

The incident occurred when the Mumbai-bound express train, which was supposed to travel via Machapur and Raj Athagarh en route to Mumbai, took a wrong track at Machhapur station and travelled to Radhakishorepur due to wrong signalling by the Machapur Station Master. After the mistake was noticed by the driver and guard, the train was stationed at Radhakishorepur for about an hour before returning to Raj Atahagrh and proceeding on its normal route.

Though the error did not lead to any accident, but the incident raised the hackles of railway officials as it happens barely a few days after the Utkal Express accident in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday killed 24 passengers and injured over 60, and the derailment of the Azamgarh-Delhi Kaifiyat Express in Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh yesterday, leaving over 70 persons injured.

The incident took place on a day when Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu offered to resign from his post taking moral responsibility for the series of train mishaps in recent times.
