Limited impact of Maoists’ 24-hour bandh in Kandhamal

Phulbani: The 24-hour bandh being observed by Maoists in at least four districts in the state today, protesting the killing of five rebels in police encounter on May 13 had a mixed impact in Kandhamal district.

The bandh which is also being observed simultaneously in Kalahandi, Boudh and Nayagarh districts witnessed partial closure of the shops and business establishments starting from the morning whereas it had a limited impact on the vehicular movement on the roads till the noon.

Members of the Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of CPI (Maoist) blocked Pokharibandha and Baliguda-Landagaon route by placing tree branches during the bandh observation and disrupted vehicular movement to areas like Daringbadi, Brahmanigaon, Srirampur, Belghar, Tumudibandha areas.

Similarly, Maoists also put up posters at several places in three other districts where the bandh was being observed and appealed people to join them overwhelmingly in protest to the killing of rebels at Sudukumpa forest near Golanki in Kandhamal.

Police have beefed up security arrangements and intensified combing operation in all the four districts to avoid any untoward incident.
