KISS student Mamata Dalai receives Jeevan Raksha Padak

Bhubaneswar: Mamata Dalai, a student of of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar, on Wednesday received the prestigious Jeevan Raksha Padak on the occasion of 72nd Independence Day.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik handed over the award to the eight-year old brave girl at a special function held at Jayadev Bhawan here.

Mamata, a native of Bankuala village under Dangamal Gram Panchyat in Kendrapara district of Odisha, has been selected for the prestigious award for showing exemplary courage and presence of mind in saving her elder sister Ashanti from a crocodile’s mouth while both were taking bath in a pond of their village on April 6, 2017.

Mamata had also received National Bravery Award 2017 from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her brave act.

Established on 30 September 1961, the Jeevan Raksha Padak is a civilian lifesaving award, presented by the Government of India, to reward person saving lives from drowning, fire, or mine accidents.
