Justice Vineet Saran elevated as Supreme Court Judge

New Delhi: The Union Government notified the appointment of Justice Vineet Saran, Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, to the Supreme Court on late Friday.

The notification appointing Saran states, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Vineet Saran, Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, to be a judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

Justice Saran was appointed as a Judge in the Allahabad High Court in February 2002 and after serving there for thirteen years, he was transferred to the Karnataka High Court on February 16, 2015. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on February 26, 2016.

Besides Justice Saran, Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice KM Joseph and Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee have also been elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court.

With the elevation of Justice Banerjee This is the first time that the Supreme Court, which already has Justice R Banumathi and Justice Indu Malhotra, will have three woman judges.
