India thrush China to win women’s hockey Asia Cup title

New Delhi: India on Sunday registered a historic win over China in the women’s Hockey Asia Cup. India beat China 5-4 in shootout in the final in Kakamighara, Japan.

This was India’s second Asia Cup title after they had beaten Japan in 2004 in New Delhi. India played the final for the first time since 2009 and won the title for the nine times.

Navjot Kaur gave India the lead in the second quarter through a field goal in the 25th minute before Tiantain Luo equalized in the 47th minute. The match went to shootouts where India scored every goal while China missed one. The score was 1-1 after regular time and 5-4 in the shootout. India had beaten China 4-1 in the group stages.

Four girls from Odisha including Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo, Sunita Lakra and Lilima Minz featured in the team.

With the win today, the Indian women’s hockey team have qualified for next year’s World Cup.
