Bhubaneswar: Servitors were left in a state of panic and rituals were hit after a major fire which broke out at the Sri Ananta Basudev temple located in the vicinity of 11th century shrine Sri Lingaraj temple in Old Town area here on Friday.

As per the report, the sparks erupted at the Roshaghar (kitchen) of the temple due to some reason and later spread very rapidly in the wee hours. Taking into account the fact that the roofs of the temple kitchen had been made of paddy straw, the flames engulfed it in minutes and reduced at least 16 rooms to ashes.

Fire brigade teams reached the temple at around 4 AM after getting intimation and brought the flames under control with the help of at least three fire tenders.

While the exact amount of loss of temple property in the fire is yet to be accessed, it is very likely that the ‘Mahaprasad’ sale at the shrine will be badly hit due to the mishap, which stands as a major hub for it in the city.

However, this is not the first time that the Ananta Basudev temple witnessed such a mishap. In 2008, a major fire which had occurred in the temple had also gutted a significant amount of property.
