Farmer commits suicide over crop loss in Ganjam Berhampur: Farmer suicide continues to be unabated in the state with such fresh report coming from Ganjam district on Saturday.

One Rajendra Bhuyan of Baulajholi village under Kukudakhandi block of the district committed suicide by consuming poison allegedly over crop failure.

Family members of Bhuyan claimed that he had taken loans to cultivate paddy in 4 acres of land. However, the crop got damaged due to pest attack followed by the incessant rain due to depression.  The share cropper was under severe mental pressure following the crop loss which forced him to take the drastic step.

“My father had taken loan from the bank and from others in the village to cultivate paddy in 4 acres of land. But, the crops were destroyed due to incessant rains. The crops were also attacked by the pest earlier too, following which my father consumed poison,” alleged Laxaman Bhuyan, son of the deceased share cropper.

On being informed, Berhampur Sadar Police rushed to the village and sent Bhuyan’s body to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital for postmortem. Police also have initiated an investigation into the matter.
