Phulbani: In an instance of how a law enforcer turned law breaker, police arrested an Excise Sub Inspector (SI) on the charge of collecting extortion money from a local in Sautikia village under Baliguda police limits in Kandhamal district last night.
The accused has been identified as S Simanchal Rao, SI, Phulbani District Excise.
As per a complaint filed by a group of residents of Sautikia village with Baliguda Police, Rao misused his mandate on December 12 night last year and barged into one local Surendra Kahar’s house without permission. Later threatening to falsely implicate him in drug trafficking case the official collected an extortion money worth Rs 50,000 from him.
Irked over Rao’s act the locals had detained an Excise team in the village for hours at that time and later lodged a case with police.
The accused SI has been forwarded to court today.
