Dhenkanal: In a tragic incident, an Engineering student was killed while six of her friends were injured after lightning struck them at Karanda village in Khajuriakata under Hindol block in the district this afternoon.
According to reports, a group of seven students of Pathani Samanta Engineering College were waiting for a bus when lightning struck them killing one Kalpana Nayak, first year Diploma student, on the spot.
Six other students were also injured due to the lightning. All of them have been admitted to the Khajuriakata Community Health Centre (CHC). Condition of one of them is said to be critical.
The unfortunate incident took place while they were waiting for the bus to return home after their class.
Meanwhile, police have initiated an investigation into the matter by sending the girl’s body to the hospital for postmortem.
A pall of gloom descended on the locality following the incident.
