Bhanjanagar: Tension ran high on NH-59 near Mujagarh in Ganjam district on Tuesday as locals staged a road blockade over an elderly man’s death under the wheels of a speeding SUV.
The deceased has been identified as Kashinath Nayak of Mujagarh village.
The victim was crossing the highway in a hurry when the mishap took place. Driver of a speeding Max Pickup van which was heading to Kandhamal from Bhanjanagar lost control over the wheels and ran him over from behind.
Angry locals staged a road blockade at Mujagarh Square following the accident and demanded immediate arrest of the accused driver who drove away from the spot.
Though some locals detained the SUV involved in the accident near Durgaprasad village later in the day the driver managed to give them a slip.
Bhanjanagar Police reached the spot to seize the body for autopsy and removed the road blockade after having a talk with the locals.
