Commonwealth Games 2018: Mirabai Chanu wins gold after P Gururaja’s silver

Gold Coast: Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the first gold medal for India in the ongoing Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Thursday. Mirabai pocketed the medal competing in the 48kg category of the weightlifting.
She also set a new record in Commonwealth games and surpassed her own personal record as she lifted a total of 196 kgs in snatch and clean and jerk combined.
Marie Hanitra of Mauritius won the silver by finishing a distant second with a total of 170 kg while Dinusha Gomes of Sri Lanka took bronze with 155 kg.
With Mirabai Chanu’s medal, India have two medals. Earlier, Gururaja Poojary won silver in the 56 kg category of weightlifting.
Meanwhile, people from all walks of life including Union Ministers, Bollywood stars and sports personality took to twitter to congratulate the 23-year-old golden girl.
