Commissionerate Police busts fake currency racket; arrests 5 with Rs 4.5 lakh

Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police busted a fake Indian currency note (FICN) printing unit which was operating at the Paluru Bangla Street in Berhampur in Ganjam district and arrested at least five persons in connection with the case last night.

The held accused are, Rameswar Moharana (43) alias Ramesh and K Ramesh (56) of Ganjam and Pranam Bhoi (22), Dillip Bhoi (19) and Sarat Kumar Sahoo (32) alias Bapi of Khordha districts.

The FICN racket was unearthed after Tamando Police here got a tip-off on the fake currency circulation yesterday and conducted a raid in Mahura Bazaar area along with the Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Commissionerate Police. During the raid, the police succeeded in arresting Pranam, Dillip and Sarat from the spot and seized fake currency notes of 100, 500 and 2000 denominations with a face value of Rs 15,000 from their possession.

During their interrogation, the accused trio disclosed the name of one Ramesh from Berhampur and claimed he had given them the FICN consignment to circulate in Bhubaneswar market.

Another police team which rushed to Berhampur following the information last night, succeeded in arresting Ramesh along with Rameswar and seized fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 4,49,550 from them. The seized currency notes include 170 notes in Rs 2000, 100 notes in Rs 500, 200 notes in Rs 200, 322 notes in Rs 100 and 57 notes in Rs 50 denominations.

Police also found 1 colour printer, 22 Xerox cartridges, 9 rubber stamps, 32 nail polish, 22 paper cutters, 5 mobile phones, 1 steel scale from the currency printing unit operated by the accused duo and sealed it.

Police said, the racket was sending FICN to places like Gunupur, Koraput and Khordha in Odisha along with Northern Andhra Pradesh.

The accused would be forwarded to court today, said police.
