CM announces ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for Malkangiri school rape victim’s kin

Bhubaneswar: CM Naveen Patnaik today announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the Class 10 girl student of Sikhapally SSD Girls High School of Malkangiri, who committed suicide on August 2 after being raped by the headmaster of the school.

As per a communication from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), a check for the ex-gratia amount was handed over to the family of the victim by Malkangiri district administration today.

The compensation on the part of the State Government came after it attracted much criticism in the case. Opposition parties also resorted to widespread protests against the BJD Government on the issue.

Notably, the victim girl identified as Bandana Sarkar went missing from the school hostel ahead of the dinner on the day of the incident. The deceased was later found in a pool of blood in the computer lab of the school with her wrists slit. Though the school authorities rushed the girl to Malkangiri DHH immediately after the incident, doctors present there declared her brought dead. While the school authorities later claimed it to be a case of suicide the victim’s family smelled rat and alleged that she had been killed after rape attempt.

After investigating into the case, police arrested the accused headmaster Biswajit Sarkar yesterday.

The probe team also found a notebook of the victim in which she had accused the headmaster of sexually assaulting her.
