Child-lifting Rumour: Woman, 2 others thrashed in separate incidents in Odisha

Soro/Bhanjanagar: Despite denial of police on child-lifting gang’s presence in Odisha yesterday, angry mob thrashed at least three persons including a woman in separate incidents in the state on Monday suspecting them to be child-lifters.

In the first instance, a group of commuters detained an unidentified woman at Balang Square on Soro-Anantpur Road under Soro Police Station area in Balasore district over her suspicious movement this morning. After she failed to answer to the satisfaction of the detainers during her quizzing, the angry mob branded her as a child-lifter, stripped naked and beaten up mercilessly.

The victim woman was later rescued by Soro Police from the clutches of the attackers.

In a similar incident, residents in Jahniapada village near Tudigadia under Khaira police limits in the same district detained a beggar boy after suspecting him as a child-lifter. Later they tied him to a pole in the village and meted out inhumane torture.

The victim was released after Khaira Police’s intervention.

In Ganjam, a group of commuters detained a man over his suspicious movement near Kainphulia Square in Aska area. After initial rough up he was handed over to Aska Police which reached the spot immediately.

“After preliminary investigation the detainee has been found to be a mentally sick. He is not associated with any child-lifting gang in any manner,” informed Santosh Kumar Jena, IIC, Aska Police Station.

Notably, hoax messages are doing rounds on social media stating that child kidnappers are on the prowl. Confirming it to be a rumour, the Director-general of police RP Sharma instructed the district superintendents of police (SPs) to take action against those spreading such messages on social media.
