Cuttack/Sambalpur: Unidentified miscreants looted an unspecified amount of cash from a nationalised bank and made a failed attempt to loot another in separate incidents in the state last night.

In the first instance, a group of burglars barged into a Canara Bank Uttaran branch located near Adaspur area under Cuttack district late in the night yesterday by opening the locks of the main gate. Later they took away cash and jewelleries after breaking open the lockers.

The loot came to fore after some customers reached the bank this morning and alerted the staffs as well as the local police.

Police have started investigation in the case and are examining the CCTV footages available with shops and houses located near the bank to identify the looters.

In a similar incident, a group of looters sneaked into the Gochhara Branch of the State Bank of India located under Mahulpali Police limits in Sambalpur district in the same night.

The incident came to light this morning after the bank staff reached for duty and found the locks of at least three gates including the main gate of the branch broken. However, the locker was found intact with a gas cutter lying nearby.

While Mahulpali Police has started investigation into the case it suspects that the looters have failed to loot cash and jewelleries from the branch despite desperate efforts.
