Brown sugar worth over Rs 14 lakh seized, woman held in Puri

Puri: Launching a crackdown on drug peddlers in the district, Puri Excise officials arrested a woman from Narendra Kona area in the city and seized around 46 grams of brown sugar from her possession on Saturday.

The arrested woman has been identified as Latamani Nayak, a resident of Puri.

The raid was conducted after Puri Excise Sub-Inspector’s Office got a tip-off on brown sugar selling taking place at Debighat of Narendra Kona area in the city in the morning.

A team of Excise officials led by Sub Inspector Suryanarayan Rath conducted the raid at around 10 AM and found Latamani busy in selling the banned drug to customers. They took her to custody and seized a packet of brown sugar from her possession. They also seized a sum of Rs 1,400 from the spot.

“The seized brown sugar would worth around Rs 14.6 lakh. During her interrogation the accused woman revealed that she got brown sugar packets delivered by a couple from Jaleswar area of Balasore district. We are investigating the matter and trying to trace the couple,” said Prasanna Kumar Mohanty, Excise Superintendent, Puri.

A case under Section 21 (B) of NDPS Act has been lodged against the accused woman and she has been forwarded to court.
