Bhubaneswar: In a major development, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Friday asked its suspended leader Baijayant Panda to tender resignation as the Member of Lok Sabha on moral grounds over submitting false affidavit before the Election Commission (EC).

Addressing a press conference at the party head office here, BJD Vice President Bed Prakash Agarwal said, “In the last few years, Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda has drawn annual salary and allowances amounting to Rs 2.79 Cr, Rs 1.45 Cr, Rs 1.61 Cr and Rs 7. 60 Cr as Vice-Chairman of IMFA- a company involved in ferro alloys, mining and power.”

“The fact that he is a paid employee and working as Vice Chairman in IMFA has been concealed by Panda in the affidavit dated 21st March 2014 filed as part of his nomination papers for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections,” Agarwal added.

The veteran BJD leader and Patkura MLA also pointed out that Panda has cheated and misled the party, party leadership and above all the people of Kendrapara Lok sabha constituency about his employment in IMFA, and hence he has lost moral authority to continue as Member of Parliament from Kendrapara.

Health Minister Pratap Jena and MLA Atanu Sabyasachi were also present during the press conference.

On January 24, Panda was suspended from the primary membership of BJD for his alleged anti-party activities.

Panda was elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 and 2014 from Kendrapara Lok Sabha constituency. Earlier, he was elected to Rajya Sabha twice from BJD in 2000 and 2006.
