Bird Flu: Culling of poultry birds underway in Paradip

Paradip: The culling of poultry birds which began by Jagatsinghpur district administration yesterday after detection of avian influenza in Badapadia and Sandhkuda of the town is underway on the second consecutive day on Monday.

A 40-member team has been engaged in the task of killing the poultry birds. The team had killed 60 birds yesterday.

The team burries the carcasses of the birds in Paradip dump yard after killing them. Besides, it is carrying out awareness programme in the area. The team members are urging the locals living within one kilometer radiation of the affected villages not to consume chicken and duck meat. The team is also requesting the villagers not to take eggs.

Jagatsinghpur Collector Sachidananda Sahoo had on Saturday sounded alert in the affected areas after Animal Disease Research Institute (ADRI) Fulnakhara, Cuttack detected H5N1 in the three crows which were found dead in Badapadia and Sandhkuda last week.

Later, Sahoo held a meeting with officials of Animal Husbandry, Revenue and Health departments, block offices and police department at the collectorate to take stock of the situation and discuss measures to prevent spread of the infection.

Likewise, the Kendrapara district administration has took bird blue preventive measures in 16 villages of the Mahakalapada block of the district after avian influenza was detected in some dead birds in the area.
