Bhadrak Road Mishap: Driver of killer Andhra truck held

Bhadrak: Police have finally succeeded in arresting the driver of the killer truck which crushed at least five school students under its wheels and left nine others hurt near Ranital on National Highway-16 in the district last Thursday.

The held driver has been identified as D Venkatadri, a resident of Bhangarpallam village in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh State.

Informing on the arrest to media this morning, Bhadrak SDPO Jalandhar Jali said the accused driver was arrested by a team of Bhadrak Rural Police from his village last night where he was absconding since the incident.

Venkatadri, who was carrying a wheat consignment from Bihar to Bengaluru in his truck on July 19 ran over a number of students of Ranital High School under the wheels of his vehicle. While, five of the students died on the spot, nine others sustained injuries in the mishap and rushed to hospital.

Tension ran high in Ranital area following the accident and angry locals staged a road blockade in demand of compensation and later indulged in a scuffle with police.

CM Naveen Patnaik later announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured in the case.
