Gajapati/Phulbani: With a sharp rise in the cases of attack on strangers on child theft suspicion across the state, at least eight persons have sustained injuries in attack by mob in separate incidents in Odisha since last night.

In the first incident which took place late in the night yesterday in Siali village under Kashinagar police limits in Gajapati district, angry locals detained a group of four officials of a finance company from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh over child-lifting suspicion and thrashed them brutally.

The officials who had reached Lentaguda village in a loan recovery task and were taking a local defaulter namely Sabar Gopal with them in a Hyundai Eon car suffered a mob attack in which their vehicle also got damaged.

The victims were rescued after Kashinagar Police reached the spot and took them into custody later in the night.

In a similar incident this morning, locals in Sarangada village under Baliguda Tehsil in Kandhamal district detained at least four non-Odia youths while they were wandering suspiciously in the area. After they failed to answer to the satisfaction of the villagers during quizzing, the angry residents tied them to a poll in the village and subjected to inhumane torture.

The accused were handed over to Sarangada Police later in the morning.

Notably, the state has registered an increase in incidents of mob justice over child theft suspicion in the recent past after spread of rumours on the same on various social media platforms.
